It is found across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia, south in the east to Connecticut and Ohio and in the west to Colorado.The wingspan is 20-28 mm. Adults are on wing from July to August. There is one generation per year. The larvae feed on sedges.The Noctuidae or owlet moths are a family of robustly-built moths that includes more than 35,000 known species out of possibly 100,000 total, in more than 4,200 genera.
